‘Norwich: City of Industries’ focuses on Norwich’s often forgotten two-hundred-year-old industrial heritage. The exhibition ‘Norwich Works’ at Norwich Castle Museum and Art Gallery has renewed interest in the city’s industrial traditions, some of which are within living memory. Others, including the weaving of horsehair cloth and cigar making have been consigned to the history books.
The talk will cover the city’s role as one of England’s most important textile centres where the ‘Norwich Stuffs’ – worsted and silk cloth – were woven, its shoe industry which in many ways took the place of weaving as a major industry and employer, and other important industries including brewing, engineering and the processing of food.
This talk is part of the public programme exploring our exhibition Norwich Works: The Industrial Photography of Walter and Rita Nurnberg
Tickets include museum admission.
