Medieval Festival

Castle and Marketplace

Immerse yourself in the sights and sounds of Norwich in the Middle Ages at the Medieval Festival.

Norwich Castle and Norwich Cathedral have teamed up to host this free special event, celebrating the history and heritage of medieval England’s second city. Experience the lives of Normans and Saxons through two living history camps and enjoy hands-on crafts, costumed characters, combat skills, weaponry displays, and more.

At Norwich Castle Green, a 14th century living-history camp created by the Norwich and Norfolk Medieval Association (NANMA) will offer activities including using the shave horse to practice skills used in making longbow staves, arrow fletching, bees-wax candle dipping, illuminated manuscripts making, soft-play sword combat, armour try-outs, and medieval coin striking which you can take home with you! Plus, musical performances from medieval music specialists Pearl in the Egg.

At Norwich Cathedral Upper Green, discover re-enactment group Ordgar’s award-winning 10-11th century Saxon and Norman camp, offering the opportunity to make clay pinch pots, create table braids, willow sprang weavings to take home, leather coin pouches, key fobs with rune designs, and play traditional games like Nine Men’s Morris and the Viking game Hnefatafl. Plus, a demonstration of sharp weapons in action, try-on helmets and shields for that perfect photo opportunity and learn to grind flour on a quern stone.

Don’t forget to pick up your trail map from Norwich Castle or Cathedral and help Snap the Dragon and Flint the Fox find their medieval mouse friends hiding in local businesses along the way – complete the route to receive a sticker.

Medieval Festival is free to attend and suitable for all ages.
