Julian of Norwich (1343-1416) is Britain’s best known female mystic. 2023 is the 650th anniversary of her ‘shewings’ or visions, which revealed to her aspects of God’s love. These visions are at the heart of her book – Revelations of Divine Love, the first book written by a woman in English.
This tour explores late 14th and early 15th Norwich, including a visit to St Julian’s Church, where Julian was based as an anchorite and the stories of Margery Kempe and Richard Caister. We look at Norwich recovering from the Black Death and becoming a great trading and manufacturing city, with the Great Market at its centre and the establishment of Dragon Hall, along with the importance of the Benedictine Monastery, the four orders of Friars, Carrow Nunnery and the many churches in the city. Tour includes tea/coffee.
