English Tourism Week is all about a journey of discovery. Taking a closer look at the areas we live in, visit often or places we have yet to discover. England is packed full of incredible places to visit, see, stay, eat and shop, so take some time out to take a closer look at what’s on offer.
And is there a better way to celebrate English Tourism Week than a fun, interesting (and sometimes tasty) tour of a beautiful city? Whether you’ve lived in Norwich all your life, or you’re taking a short break – a tour is a brilliant way to spend a day and learn something new.
To celebrate English Tourism Week, we’ve put together a list of some of the best tours around for you to enjoy.
A guided walking tour is an ideal way to introduce yourself to a city. And with Paul Dickson Tours you’re guaranteed a warm welcome to Norwich. The Norwich, an Introduction, tour (£7.50pp) takes you through more than 1000 years of Norwich’s history, starting at The Forum and finishing outside Norwich Cathedral. Are you an avid reader? Shardlake’s Norwich, a tour celebrating CJ Sansom’s best-selling novel Tombland might be just up your street (£10pp). And if you’re a history buff, The Great Market (£9pp), Norwich: A Black History (£7.50pp) or the Maids Head Hotel, Tombland & Elm Hill (£8.50pp) tours may just be the perfect fit. And why not treat yourself to the Historic Pubs of Norwich tour? Finishing up at the Maids Head, you’ll be invited to sample the hotel’s Maids Head Ale, brewed by Woodfordes (£9pp).
There are even more tours to discover with Paul Dickson, so take a look at the website to find the perfect one for you.
Cheryl Cade is an award-winning independent tour guide based in Norwich. And she offers up the ideal tour for food and drink lovers. As a beer and cheese expert, Cheryl’s tours explore the history of Norwich alongside its food and drink. This is the perfect tour to really immerse yourself in the culture of Norwich and Norfolk.
Norwich is famed for its fantastic street food at Norwich Market and for being the first City of Ale – so what better way to discover the city than with a food and drink themed experience? Take a Brewery Tap Room tour and visit three of Norwich’s historic brewery taps (£45pp). Or why not opt for a Beer & Cheese Matching Tour where you’ll enjoy both at four different pubs (£45pp). Or would a tea, coffee and cake tour be more your speed (£45pp)? There’s also regular gin (£47.99) and cheese (£19.99 adults, £14.99 ages 7-17) tours – so whatever tickles your tastebuds, there’s a tour for you. Check the website for more tours and information.
This tour is a fairly new addition to Norwich, but it’s not one to be missed. A relaxed, sociable walking tour which explores 2000 years of the city’s history, you’ll also be treated to drinks in a few notable pubs in Norwich. From Norman structures to preserved Tudor streets and more – you’ll discover surprising innovations, famous businesses and celebrated local characters (and possibly even a ghost or two!)
Perhaps the highlight of the tour will be the visits to iconic Norwich pubs, so you can really experience the CAMRA “City of Ale”. The tour is billed as a genteel ramble taking 3-4 hours, progressing at the group’s pace. £25 per person. See the website for booking details.
4. Norwich Ghost Walks
For a truly unique night out, we would recommend Norwich Ghost Walks. Join a ghost-hunter on a journey through the most haunted areas of the city. You’ll hear the tales of lost spirits and poltergeists who are still seen and heard to this day! Perhaps you’ll have a paranormal experience of your own… See Norwich in a new (spooky) light as you creep through Norwich Cathedral, Norwich Castle, Elm Hill, Tombland and more. Tours start at 7.20pm from the Adam and Eve pub and last approximately two hours. £12 per person.
