Prominently poised on Wensum Street lies this popular pub. And its popularity is for good reason! With a gorgeous view of the River Wensum and Fye Bridge, the Ribs of Beef hides a beer garden worth shouting about.
With such a central location a stone’s throw away from the University of the Arts and a 15-minute walk away from the train station, there’s few choices as good as the Ribs of Beef. Settle down with your favourite drink at this historic pub and soak in the views on those warmer days, it’s worth it.

You don’t need to see a Norwich Theatre show to visit this friendly bar and beer garden (although you really should). Here, everyone is welcome to catch up with friends, enjoy a quick pint, or get on with some work in a lively atmosphere.
Their beer garden is beautiful too, overlooking the River Wensum and adorned in multi-coloured lights to bring a different look to anywhere else. So, come day or night, sitting outdoors at the Playhouse Bar is a great choice of scenery!
Behind the bar, they offer a huge range of drinks, from the ones we all know, to the craft beers and spirits we’re yet to discover. You can even borrow a hot water bottle for a small fee on those colder days, and they have a huge range of teas to choose from.
Open from midday to late every day, this beer garden is definitely worth a visit the next time you’re in the city centre!
The Beer Garden at the Norwich Theatre Playhouse Bar
This is not a beer garden, however, it is a hidden gem of a courtyard in one of Norwich’s most historic settings on Elm Hill. And you can drink wine. With a bite to eat. What more can you ask for?
You really do have to be in the know to find this exquisite outdoor area open for breakfast until late afternoon. They serve dinner Thursdays to Saturday until 8.30pm. But you don’t have to eat – you can just pop in for a drink. This really is a perfect stop for when you’re exploring all of the delights Elm Hill has to offer. It’s even better when it’s summer too!
The Courtyard at the Britons Arms
Located on Pottergate, the heart of the Norwich Lanes, is the Belgian Monk. Outside, you’ll find yourself greeted by a gorgeous building and inside, you’ll find this pub exuding everything Belgium, from the décor to the smell of their incredible dishes.
Inspired by the country’s great food and drink scene, the Belgian Monk will take you on a journey of the senses with their ever-changing and tasty menus. This pub has even gained a reputation for their cherry beer ‘Ter Dolen Kriek’, their best-seller by far, and for good reason!
For those warmer days, the Belgian Monk’s beer garden is a must-visit. This inviting yet secluded spot is perfect for relaxing with a drink under some much-needed shade. No need to head inside to get the rounds, the attentive staff of this pub offer table service outside, even if you’re just stopping for a drink.

The Belgian Monk’s Beer Garden
The oldest pub in the city, the Adam and Eve is a legendary local that you absolutely have to see for yourself. Located in Bishopgate, just north of Norwich Cathedral, this quaint pub has been serving drinks since its earliest recording in 1249, back when it was a monastery brewhouse.
Now, you can follow 800 years of history and enjoy a refreshing drink, whether you’re making a day of it in the city centre, going for a walk around the Cathedral, or just coming in for plans with friends!
There are some tasty drinks on offer too, with plenty on tap for the beer enthusiast, from favourites like Amstel, to local craft like Woodfordes. While it’s not strictly a beer garden, there are plenty of benches outside the front of the historic pub, perfect to catch some rays before heading further into Norwich.
The Adam and Eve Pub
It should be no surprise that there’s so many historic pubs in Norwich to enjoy, and the Garnet is no different. Serving patrons since 1861, this beautiful pub is easy to find right in the centre of the city, next to Norwich Market and its sister company selling homeware!
Here, everyone is welcome, and the Garnet love working with those around them. Stop by Brick Pizza next door or get some of your favourite food from the market, then feel free to enjoy it with a drink at the Garnet! Is there a better way to spend your lunch or evening?
There’s a great selection of seating outside, with plenty of benches to choose from around the pub. The view is great too, as you overlook the market, you can also catch a glimpse of Norwich Castle, high up on its mound. The Garnet even make their own lager (suitably called ‘The Garnet’), so there’s no better way to support this pub than with a pint of their very own!
