Norwich

Norwich Her Story Walk is a 90-minute theatrical walking tour that uncovers the overlooked contributions of remarkable women in Norwich’s history.

Combining storytelling, historical insights, and dramatic retellings, the tour brings to life the struggles and triumphs of women who fought injustice and shaped society.

Participants will visit Norwich Castle, the Cathedral, the Lanes, and Colegate, exploring the lives of influential figures such as Emma de Gauder, a young noblewoman who defended the castle; Amelia Opie, an abolitionist writer; Jenny Lind, a philanthropist opera singer; and Elizabeth Fry, a prison reformer. Also featured are Harriet Martineau, a pioneering social theorist; Julian of Norwich, a medieval mystic; Sarah Glover, an innovator in music education; Boudicca, the warrior queen; and Edith Cavell, a WWI nurse who aided Allied soldiers.

The tour celebrates Norwich’s rebellious spirit through key themes: Fighting for Freedom, highlighting Boudicca’s resistance and Opie’s abolitionist efforts; Women’s Rights and Equality, showcasing Martineau’s advocacy for social change and Glover’s educational impact; Reforming Society, featuring Fry’s prison reforms, Lind’s philanthropy, and Cavell’s heroism; and Faith and Power, illustrating Julian of Norwich’s theological influence and Emma de Gauder’s defiance.
