When it comes to shopping, we all love buying from an independent business, right? Wherever you are and no matter what you purchase, it feels good to know you’ve just supported the hard work of a local entrepreneur, artist, artisan, or all of the above! And when you’re in Norwich, there are opportunities aplenty to support our local businesses.
From handcrafted, one-of-a-kind products, to the array of delicious food from across the globe congregating right here in the City of Stories, we’re lucky to have such a thriving independent scene. And you can enjoy it too! Here’s some of our favourite independents you absolutely must visit.
Not only an icon of the city, but the home to independent businesses galore, Norwich Market should without doubt be at the top of your list for any visit. With every single stall you pass, it’s guaranteed that the friendly faces behind them are uniquely individual businesses plying their craft.
Follow the hypnotic aromas and find stalls like Bun Box, The Bodega, The Banger Stop, Lucy’s Fish and Chips, Italian Street Food, and much more. Or explore the rows and columns of the Market to discover stalls like Sir Toby’s Beers, Taxi Vintage Clothing, Anderson’s Clothing, and many others. Truthfully, you can’t go wrong when visiting the Market, get lost in exploring and shopping, and you’ll come out of it blown away by the wonderful sense of community.
For newcomers and regular visitors alike, this brand-new shop inside our iconic Norwich Castle is an absolute must-see. As part of the Castle’s multi-million pound ‘Royal Palace Reborn’ renovation project, so too have the Castle’s shop and restaurant seen a huge upheaval in their look and offer. Now, this shop is the perfect place for high-quality gifts and souvenirs with our local heritage, local makers, and local ingredients all involved.
Many of the products on offer at the Norwich Castle Shop take inspiration from the city’s internationally important collections like Norwich Shawls, Lowestoft Porcelain, Taylor’s Seeds, and our fine art and natural history of North Norfolk’s Deep History Coast. There’s also a ‘Made in Norfolk’ section, featuring products from partners such as Madeleine Spencer Jewellery, The Pocket Forge, Salt Glass Studio, The English Whisky Co, Norfolk Raider Cider, and many, many more. Whatever budget you have, you’re sure to find something to love in this gorgeous shop. And after, make time for lunch in their restaurant and try the ‘Famous Castle Quiche’, it’s famous for a reason!
As Norwich’s longest-running family-owned business and flagship department store, you absolutely can’t miss a trip to Jarrolds on a visit to the city. In fact, with over five floors and 50 departments, you’re sure to find absolutely anything your heart desires. But Jarrolds aren’t the only independent you’ll find inside…
Across Jarrolds sprawling store, particularly in their basement level Food Hall, you’ll soon learn that Jarrolds are massive endorsers of local products themselves. So much so that a huge proportion of their items (again, particularly the food and drink) are from local independent producers. There’s cheese, wine, chocolate, whiskey, cookies, jams and conserves, gin, condiments, and so much more, all in one place! What’s not to love?
It’s only right to follow with the second-longest running family business in Norwich! For that, you’ll need to visit Dipples on Swan Lane, who are now in their fifth generation. Stepping into their gorgeous store, you’ll be greeted with a warm welcome and be invited to browse their gorgeous selection at your own leisure – though it may take a while to get through, as they offer one of the largest collections of jewellery, diamonds, and watches in the East of England!
If you aren’t sure what you’re looking for, or can’t seem to locate exactly what you want, just ask their friendly and knowledgeable staff, who can help you settle on that perfect something. And more than anything, it’s a gorgeous place to browse for any future gifts… or engagements!
Nestled within the award-winning Norwich Lanes, the hub of independent shopping in the City of Stories, you’ll find Atwin on the historic Bridewell Alley. Consciously curating womenswear and lifestyle products from British independent designers and artisans, you’ll absolutely love a visit to Atwin. A real hidden gem of Norwich, Country & Eastern is the beautiful museum shop of The South Asia Collection (which has free entry, so you’re getting a wonderful museum experience too!). And it truly is a beautiful sight to take in, especially since it’s housed in the former site of a Victorian skating rink!
As soon as you enter this building, you’re greeted by the warm welcome of South Asian items, artefacts, and antiquities all lighting up the room. But the best bit is among them are items that you can buy and take home for yourself. Though, not anything of historic significance. You will find gorgeous rugs, books, fabrics, clothing, furniture, accessories, and so much more. You’re guaranteed to find something stunning. Go in-person to enjoy this blend of a shop and museum or shop online!
Not only independent but truly unique, you’ll find Sonkai in the beautiful Royal Arcade alongside an assortment of even more independents to discover. And often times when you walk past or have a look in, you’ll see one of their master jewellers hard at work creating a new piece right in front of you. It’s fascinating!
Head inside and chat to one of the friendly members of staff and you’ll be able to discover their range of handcrafted jewellery, including bracelets, rings, and necklaces – they do it all! Sonkai are also the place to go if you want something really unique with their bespoke, one-of-a-kind pieces, made exactly to your liking.
Few shops in the City of Stories are as unique and historic as Bowhill & Elliott, and they’re a wonderful independent to support too! So, they’re really a must-visit when you’re here in Norwich. But what makes them so unique, we hear you ask? Well… since 1874, Bowhill & Elliott have handcrafted luxury slippers and house shoes. And we mean luxury.
In fact, they’re the only shop left in the UK who make their house shoes and slippers in the back of the shop and sell them in the front! Plus, although they may be small in stature, they’re an iconic brand across the world, having plied their craft for a range of celebrities and films including ‘The Darkest Hour’ and ‘Saltburn’. And if all of that isn’t enough to encourage you to pop in and explore their range, their £50 discount for in-store purchases and piano open to be played by the public should certainly be! Be sure to pop in when you’re next in Norwich, you absolutely won’t regret it. Especially if you come away with a new pair of slippers!
A little drive outside of Norwich now. Based out in Honingham, approximately a 25-minute drive from the City of Stories, Goat Shed is a family-run business with a passion for food, farming, and community. And they have a farm shop unlike any other, which you really must see to believe.
With their own handmade products made from goat’s milk, as well as fresh fruit and vegetables, meat, and other local producer’s products, the shop is a haven for shopping independently. They also recently underwent huge evolution, doubling their shop in size, offering new deli, bakery, and butchery counters, while a new paddock area and ‘maize maze’ connects the visitors to animals and farmland, so it’s become even more of a must-see than before!
If you’ve never been to the Sainsbury Centre before now, this is the perfect opportunity to go – we’re sure you’ll be back! Inside this Norman Foster designed building, which is also home to the Avengers in Avengers: Age of Ultron and subsequent titles, you’ll find a public museum and gallery filled with wonders, including a marvelous shop! (See what we did there?)
On offer at this quaint but goodie-filled shop, you’ll find everything an art-lover could wish for, from stunning prints and greetings cards to statuettes, children’s games, and even your own art supplies! It’s truly wonderful here, and a must-visit for any creative in your life.
