The Greenhouse Cafe

On Friday 10th October the Greenhouse will join in the fun and games of the Bidwells’ Norwich and Norfolk Food Festival by presenting an event entitled Trading Fairly: Going Local. The Greenhouse’s café’s volunteers will serve a three-course vegan meal cooked using local, seasonal and organic produce, and present a talk on local food production.

The event coincides perfectly with the appearance of a fresh crop of root vegetables, and they form the basis of the evening’s menu:

Butternut Squash Soup
Roasted Vegetable Shepherd’s Pie
Chocolate and Beetroot Cake

As ever, this premium local produce comes from Eostre Organics, a co-operative of organic farmers based in Norfolk. They have a long-standing relationship with The Greenhouse, which inspired the creation of this event. The driving force behind Eostre, Grahame Hughes, will speak between courses. A grower of organic fruit and vegetables for over 30 years, he offers an experienced insight into local food production.

The event begins at 7.15 and will cost £15 (£10 concessions) for the talk and the meal. Local and seasonal beer and organic wine will be available to buy on the night.

Places are limited, so book yours now by calling (01603) 631007.

Trading Fairly: Going Local is the first of four events The Greenhouse will present between now and June, as part of a project entitled Trading Fairly: Linking the Chain, which is funded by the National Lottery through Awards for All. The project stresses the repercussions of our individual choices, and shows how every product we buy as consumers has a positive or negative impact upon our local, national and international communities. We will focus upon organic produce, which is free of pesticides, chemicals and contaminants, and we'll emphasise the importance of eating natural foodstuffs that benefit our health whilst not impoverishing our environment. Eating local food and creating strong local communities will be an important part of modern , as we prepare for life in a post peak-oil world. The event will, we hope, be both educational and enjoyable.

'The Greenhouse shop and cafe is wholly-owned by the Greenhouse Trust.

The beautiful grade II listed building, on Bethel Street, is the key feature of the Trust. It has been lovingly recreated to show how our existing housing stock can be reconditioned to meet the energy demands of the 21st century. It serves the public as an exemplar of sustainable living, and showcases high levels of insulation (all using natural materials), renewable technology (photovoltaic cells and solar pipes) and rainwater harvesting.

The shop and cafe are largely run by volunteers. The shop stocks a variety of goods and a range of publications that promote many different aspects of sustainable living. The cafe opened in late 1999 and has been providing the public with homemade, vegetarian and organic food ever since. As our clientele has grown in size, so has our team of volunteers, and we now offer a substantial menu. This includes a soup of the day, a daily special, a range of sandwiches, a wide selection of cakes (including options for vegans, coeliacs, and those on wheat and sugar free diets) and our excellent salad bowl, which forms the basis for the rest of the menu. We make 12 salads fresh daily, using the best in seasonal produce, sourced from Eostre Organics. It is our long-standing trading partnership with Eostre that has inspired our event.
