Sunday 5th October

Sunday Roast at the Sainsbury Centre

Celebrate the Great Norfolk Sunday Roast in the unique surroundings of the Sainsbury Centre with a delicious traditional 2 course carvery (or vegetarian lunch) sourced from local produce, ideal for all the family. Creative play activities will be on offer in the restaurant so your children can have fun after they’ve eaten, giving you the chance to relax.

After lunch you could take part in our First Sunday, Mask Printing event. There will be free family activities in the gallery and music in the Café 1pm – 3pm by Pinky Umbrella. Artist Peter Sek will be running an activity session in the Studio (2pm – 3pm and repeated 3pm – 4pm) printing t-shirts with your own design inspired by African masks. You will need to bring your own light coloured t-shirt with you. Places for these sessions are limited and offered on a first-come, first-served basis – come early on the day to avoid disappointment and purchase your ticket before having lunch. £3 per child, free for accompanying adults.

Alternatively, why not take time to discover the Robert and Lisa Sainsbury Collection of modern European and World Art? Admission is free. Borrow one of our traveller suitcases, gallery trails or collections stories and have fun exploring as a family.

The Big Norfolk Food Debate

In association with The Joy of Food, The Institute of Food Research and the John Innes Centre, this brand new event will explore some of the big food issues of the day and provides a dramatic curtain-raiser for this year’s Festival. Presented in a 'Question Time' format, the debate will be chaired by Stephen Oldfield of PricewaterhouseCoopers with a panel of experts representing the different aspects of food production, supply and consumption:

Dr David Pencheon, a public health doctor and director of the NHS sustainability unit
John Shropshire, one of England’s biggest farmers
Sam Nundy, a senior buyer for Tesco’s
Emma Marsden, Cookery Editor for Good Housekeeping
Professor Chris Lamb, Director of The John Innes Institute
Chris Coubrough, one of Norfolk’s leading chefs (The Crown at Wells)

Whether the topic is rising food prices, organic versus GM, food security in the UK or shortages in the third world, the Big Norfolk Food Debate is a must-see event for anyone who is passionate about food and its place in our lives. As well as the general public, the audience will be made up of representatives from all areas of the food industry in Norfolk from producers and farmers to dieticians and caterers. We expect a sell-out audience, so if you are interested in attending, you'll need to pre-book your ticket in advance. Meanwhile, view a podcast and take part in our online poll to let us know what you think the really burning food issues are.

Where: John Innes Centre, Norwich Research Park, Colney, NR4 7UA
Time: 6.30pm
Admission: free, but seats in the audience need to be applied for
Tel: Contact The Joy of Food on 01603 257219 to receive an application form
